For this activity, I decided to read chapter seven “So what? Who cares?.” This chapter discusses the importance of expressing the stakes of a topic and what it means to the audience. Gerald Gaff and Cathy Birkenstein explain how an audience’s interest depends on the answers to these two questions. By addressing who should care and why they should, it brings relevance to your writing. By answering the question “so what?” as well, it can bring a sense of contemplation to the reader. If you express urgency and interest in a topic, the audience will reflect this also.
I chose this chapter because I felt like it holds great importance in writing, especially for this paper. For this prompt, I am essentially arguing my opinion on narratives and using myself as an example. And I believe it is very essential to address my audience as well as answer why it is important that I do so. This chapter was also able to teach me to do so, which I think will be beneficial to my writing. By writing the “so what” of my analysis, I can connect it back to myself more easily, which was something I was struggling with before. I think this can also help in creating more of an interest in my writing.
