Blog #7

I believe I am reaching the expectations I have created for my annotating.

Surrounding Context:

Yo-Yo Ma published his essay “Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” on an online news and blog site called World-Post. He is a cellist and a songwriter and here he writes about the role arts has in society as well as his personal life. As someone so invested in music, he vouches for the importance that the arts has on things like creativity and personal growth. He also stresses the need of empathy in order to continue the advancement of this world.

Circumstantial Context:

The purpose of me reading this text was to understand and synthesize Ma’s main points. His range of topics are very interesting and I especially found his connections between culture and empathy to be intriguing. There were a few instances, however, that I wish he expanded on before moving to the next example or idea.

Intentional Context:

Ma has a very strong argument that explains the importance of the arts and how it can expand our empathy. He writes that there is too much focus on science and math (STEM) in education and that it is necessary for art to be explored. An frequent idea he explores is that with the knowledge that STEM has prioritized, we are able to use such an advancement in technologies. These technologies now give us the ability to connect and communicate with the whole world, however we also require empathy in order to do so.

Glossing:
